closer to home than I thought

May 25, 2011

I posted Monday that the Joplin tornado didn’t affect my son and grandsons, who

live 35 miles away.  That wasn’t accurate.  I spoke to him later that day, and he told

me he went to Joplin with his girlfriend to check on her 91-year-old grandmother.

They found her house leveled.  They frantically searched the rubble, but didn’t find

her.

When they returned home, they found out that she had been discovered by first

responders and taken to the hospital there.  She has minor injuries.

Beth Reed commented on Monday’s post that she is “totally sending out thoughts

and prayers and tears to Joplin and for all of the severe weather victims.”  Beth lost

her home and belongings in a recent flood.  Please let’s send her some positivity,

too.

Although the Mississippi River is receding, the Atchalafaya River in Cajun country

has yet to crest, due to spillway drain-off.  The misery continues for thousands, but

coverage of it has virtually disappeared.  I’m keeping up with it on the New Orleans

Times-Picayune website.  CNN is busy covering Oprah’s last broadcast.

our area took most damage from the mississippi but we also had damage from the white river. i am so glad that the girls grandmother was found with only minor injuries. we were fortunate to have been spared death. when all of this is over i will post on important information for all. believe it or not fema and red cross can take days to get to you. they are very short handed so i will be letting everyone know what they need to do and how to be prepared. these agencies are in need to. i know of two workers here who lost their on homes i alabama. thank you for your support and forgive any mistakes as i am using my phone since my computer is gone.

i will be glad to give info. i am using my phone and it is very difficult at the moment to type. but a few things are very important such as having all important documents in a safe zone along with cash. if power goes out atms will not work. we were withoupower 16 hours and lots of victims are out of power for week. you have to pay for hotels and such out of your own money and fema will reimbuse you. only up to a certain amount of time and only x amount of dollars so if you fet a hundred dollar roomthey are only goinng to give like 45 dollars. i will post more late. thanks for doing this and really appreciate.you helping me.

I will get this into a post later in the week. Would it help if you used the blog to update friends and family on your well-being? Instead of trying to reach each of them individually, you could keep all of them informed with one posting. Hang tough, Beth.
