and how was your weekend?

May 16, 2011

The never-ending winterish-springish season here may be wearing down.  Some

recent days have been downright tolerable and sunshine’s predicted for later this

week.  Jude and I got out Saturday to work on our driveway, which has been ra-

vaged by rains for months on end.  It plays hob on my back, all that shoveling.  I

soaked for an hour in the evening, thinking that I’d hop out of the tub just in time

for the new “Doctor Who”.

It had been bumped by “Blade Runner”, my favorite flick.  Sweeps month, I guess.

I wasn’t ready for another viewing yet, so we settled for the spotty offerings of SNL.

We considered a second look at “Inception”, but I was just too tired to try to man-

euver its labyrinth of plot threads.  (“Is this the second dream or the third?”)

I soaked again Sunday, this time outside in a robust rain.  I repaired a stretch of the

fence in the old garden to keep deer away from our blueberry bushes.  They had

already found a breach in the netting and wiped out our strawberries.  The patchy

job should stand until Jude’s strong-as-Thor son Nathan helps me fix it skookum,

unless a deer leans on a certain fence pole.

With the fence half-ass done, I helped Jude with a mini-fence around a mini-garden

by the back deck.  Its centerpiece is a stump our friend Lee gave us.  It reminds me

of a dinosaur bone:

The little fence around it is to discourage deer from eating the plants.  They likely

won’t get that close to the house.  We’ll know soon.  We also put some netting on the

backside to keep Slinkee out.  As we were hanging it, Ollie wandered in and out to

remind us that nothing is cat-proof.

Elsewhere in the backyard, our tulips are finally blooming under the nurturing eye

of the garden goddess.

The comfrey is exploding from the ground.  Here Slinkee inspects the crop as we

prepare to propagate it.

And we keep adding to a burn pile that will become a bonfire if the Canucks win the

the Stanley Cup.

I hope your weekend was as productive as you’d hoped and as rainy as you needed.
