Chuck

June 19, 2011

I’m one of those fortunate sons who had a great dad.  Even when he had to be away

working or looking for work, I knew he was doing it for our family.  I never saw him

raise voice or hand to my mother or sister.  And the two times he yelled at me were

certainly understandable.  One was when my spider monkey got out of his cage and

wreaked havoc in our house.  The other was when my hamster escaped and got into

bed with him and Mom.  She freaked when it crawled up her leg.  (I like to think she

murmured “not now, Chuck” just before she realized what was really going on.)

Dad was a lovely man, full of warmth and wit.  I wish I could have been more like

him for my kids as I struggled with my PTSD.  I do get to guest parent occasionally

when Jude’s younger son Nathan visits.  We get along exceptionally well.  He’s smart

and funny, like his mom.  I’m happy to be involved in his education.

Here we are in front of my Father’s Day gift, firewood.

I hope your Fathers’ Day is full of pleasant happenings and memories.
