how ’bout that Sequim, Washington, eh?

April 7, 2025

I was a bit wary when I heard that there would be Trump protests across the U.S. Saturday. Meager turnouts might buoy Trump’s belief that he was yet again right, I posited, and might bring out his goon squads. Fortunately I was wrong for the (largest number possible here) time.

Aerial photos of major cities showed massive crowds. The Bay Area, always up for some rowdy dissent, drew huge responses in San Francisco AND Oakland. There were also several “Elbows Up!” rallies in Canada, including one in Victoria, B.C., attended by friends-of-the-blog Judith and Peter. They were two of about a thousand who rallied on the provincial capital grounds. As they did so, another thousand protested in Port Angeles, Washington — just 25 miles south of Victoria across the Juan de Fuca Strait.

Impressive, yes? Well, get this: 15 miles east of Port Angeles, on legendary highway U.S. 101, is the town of Sequim, population 8800 or so folks. It drew from 1298 to 1393 malcontents, depending on the clicker count. Five to ten Trump supporters attended. One merchant yelled at the crowd for driving away business.

I’ve driven through Sequim many times. Jude and I had a really funny thing happen to us there at a Popeyes’ Chicken. We struck up a conversation with an elderly couple and their probably grandson, about 8. He was interested in the eyepatch over my right eye. He asked how I got hurt. “I got whacked by a bungee cord,” I said. “You see!” his grandparents exclaimed as one, “We told you that happens!”
