let the good times and calorie count roll (up)

January 2, 2012

If I’ve ever had a better weekend than the one just done, I can’t recall it.  It

started Friday evening with a feast at Jay and Sonia’s.  Jay had recently been

moose hunting.  I had never had moose meat before.  It was prepared in a

stew with homemade biscuits.

It was heaven (for us and the moose both, I guess).  All thoughts of my

childhood idol Bullwinkle vanished as I started wondering how such a goofy

looking vegeterian ungulate could taste that great.  The meat was lean and

tender — melt-in-the-mouth quality, don’t you know.

After we stuffed ourselves, we adjourned to the living room for drinks (just

as we’d done before dinner).  The conversation was lively.  Another guest, the

ever-lovely Emily, was glowing even more than usual from mid-pregnancy.

She had brought her sister Meaghan, visiting from Haiti.  Meaghan had been

there during the devastating earthquake.  She had many compelling stories

about the temblor and the recovery.

Saturday we took our turn as hosts and had some of the usual suspects over

for a turkey with more than all the trimmings.  Again the talk sparkled and

laughter shook our farmhouse.  We cruised channels on satellite TV as we

awaited midnight, our major find being a Miles Davis concert from 1985.

We had to run our guests out earlier than usual because we had to get up

early in the morning to drive 150 miles to Victoria.  Jude’s younger son

Nathan was able to get away from work and classes for a week.

It turns out that flying on a major holiday is a good idea.  Surprisingly few

others were doing it, and the Victoria airport was the least crowded I have

ever seen it.  Nathan breezed through Customs and we were quickly on our

way home after picking up some more calories at Tim Horton’s.  When we

got back to Campbell River, we ate at Boston Pizza.

I receive no kickbacks from either eatery.  I just wanted to inform you aboot

the fine dining up here.

Anyhoo, we got home early enough to relax and catch some tube before

bedtime.  At one point we were switching from “Empire Strikes Back” to

“Raiders of the Lost Ark” and back, discussing if Han Solo could take Indiana

Jones in a dust-up.

If life gets any better than that, I wouldn’t be able to bear it.
