Etta and Otis
Etta James was one of the first ladies of rock ‘n’ roll. She gave us “Dance with
Me, Henry”, “All I Could Do Was Cry”, “Something’s Got a Hold on Me”, “Tell
Mama” and “I Just Want to Make Love to You”. She could belt with the best
of ’em. She’s in the Rock & Roll, Blues, Rockabilly and Grammy Halls of Fame.
Rolling Stone ranked her 22nd on its list of “The Greatest Singers of All Time”.
Etta’s death from leukemia was reported yesterday, five days short of her 74th
birthday and two months after the release of a critically-acclaimed album.
She was discovered at age 14 by Johnny Otis, who gave the world “Willie and
the Hand Jive”. Otis died three days ago at age 90.
