goin’ south
Sunday I’m driving to Seattle to fly to Kansas for my grandson Sean’s high school graduation.
All this week I’ve been putting a “roof” on the vegetable garden so the chickens can range
semi-freely without fear of crows, hawks, eagles and their ilk. It’s going well . . .
. . . except for some gaps.
Yesterday Jude was planting some asparagus. She asked me to keep the chickens away. I was
certain I had rearranged the netting into an effective barrier, but the girls snuck back in. Here
they are mocking me.
Jude said she wouldn’t tell anyone that they had outwitted me. I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t
either.
In the other garden, we’re planting strawberries and more blueberry bushes.
Sean is flying back with me to spend two weeks. We’ll meet up with Jude’s younger son Nathan
in Seattle. The guys will be helping us put netting over the bigger garden. And that’s very good
because it will require the digging of about 50 3′-deep postholes. They’ll also be clearing this
pile of old hog fencing, salmonberry bushes and whatnot. For now, we have it hidden behind
a beach umbrella.
It probably would have helped to unfold the umbrella.
So I’m off to fill some netting gaps. I won’t be blogging while I’m in the states, but just before I
leave Sunday, I’ll put up some favourite posts of mine that you may have missed, forgotten or
consciously repressed. I’ll be back soon to regale you with tales of my trip.
