Anchor Struck

Last month I went to a netloft in Campbell River where I’ve been buying 50-foot square nets

to use as fencing. The nets have been retired from their original intent, ocean fishing; but they

have found a meaningful new life: keeping deer from our fruits and veggies, and raptors from

our chickens.

I usually buy two or three nets at a time and the truck handles them comfortably.  This time

I bought a box net, which has four 50-foot square sides and a bottom the same size.  So the

load was double what it normally is.  The truck accepted it with a groan.

A double load means double the weight, of course.  Jude and I could pull the smaller nets off

the truck by hand, but this bad boy weighed several hundred pounds.  We attached the end

of it to the other truck . . .

. . . and off Jude drove.

It rolled out better than I had expected.

We stretched it out more by truck until we could manage it by hand . . .

. . . ending up with this configuration.

I was able to cut off a big chunk of the net to go over the blueberry grove we’re developing.

We’ll keep subdividing it until we have manageable sections we can roll up and store. In fact,
