where to begin?
Whew! In Bernie’s brief tenure as front-runner, I tried my best to feel good about some of the pundits pointing out that he might have a chance. My 73-year-old gut would have none of it. He would have an upstream struggle against Trump’s tsunami of whale shit, especially in the down ticket races, it kept insisting.
Plus, he recently had a stent put in his heart.
Biden’s crucial win in South Carolina (thanks, Jim Clyburn) and Very Good Night on Super Tuesday did not quite have the ring that all’s right with the world again, but it felt to me like we inched back from the edge of The Abyss. The markets agreed.
Listening to the millionaire Sanders bitch about rich people reminded me of the millionaire Trump’s faux rage. Other similarities come to mind. Both have merely borrowed a major political party for their own purposes. Both play the populist card, albeit from different ends of the deck. Both pursue specious goals like The Wall and Medicare for All with the tenacity and clarity of Captain Ahab.
Even though Biden has enough going against him, I think he’s the Dems’ best hope, partly because he seems to be Trump’s worst fear. The GOP is already politicizing the Burista thing, but I can’t see that gaining much traction against a health crisis that Trump is making worse with staggering efficiency. And I will gleefully take Joe’s occasional gaffes over Donnie’s endless lies any day.
After often thinking POTUS had finally pushed things too far, I can’t quite believe that this is the camel-breaker. Yet I’m cheered that the virus is a narrative that he can’t control, and the turbulent markets are shaking the foundation of his best strength.
Are you still buckled up?

Agreed – the virus is a horror film trying to play out but if it shines a spotlight on the lies and ineptitude of 45 I remain hopeful. And, yes, although Biden is part of the old school spin he is a mountain of better than 45 driving the world into all of the post-apocalyptic scenarios all at once
I have long ago stopped thinking that Trump’s newest brouhaha would be the one to dethrone him, but this one has the best legs yet. His one talking point is his exceedingly wise and prescient choice to close the border to China. That pales alongside all the other time he wasted fiddle fucking around with the lowest numbers he could find. When he boasted at the CDC that “all” the doctors were impressed by his knowledge of the virus, I almost felt sorry for him because it was such pathetic pandering. Perfectly pathetic.
I couldn’t disagree with you more. I guess Bernie is a millionaire because he owns three houses. The politicians behind Biden, the Clintons and the Obamas have done nothing but rake in the money since leaving office. Their books and speaking engagements which you would not be able to afford have made them multi-millionaires. I think it is shameful. Unlike Jimmy Carter who actually pounds nails for Habitat for Humanity. Personally I don’t ever want to see another Clinton anywhere but yesterday I was in a bookstore and there was a huge book by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton about strong women but you couldn’t tell what the title or subject was because their names were so huge on the cover.
Biden voted for the Iraq War which was plainly the wrong thing to do. I could see through their false premise for going to war and so could you why then couldn’t Pelosi, Biden and Hillary see it. Hillary said she owed George Bush a favor. Unfortunately, black people are voting for Biden because of his association with Obama and unfortunately, Obama did nothing to fight the wall street guys nor did he do much of anything else but inched us closer to affordable health care. As far as I know he did nothing for the Black People.
Bernie has always been on the front lines on all the issues, civil rights, war in Iraq, equal pay, free secondary education and health care for all. Biden is getting money now from all the wealthy people including Bloomberg because they want the status quo and not contribute to the people who need help. Democrats are a sick group and need to be changed out. I knew that call for impeachment was going to lose and this close to the election the Democrats could not afford the loss it only made Trump look good and his ratings went up. Biden would be chewed up in a debate with Trump because he stands for nothing and has too much baggage. I would really like to see Biden, the Obamas and the Clintons get their hands dirty doing something, volunteering do you ever wonder why they don’t? As always I will vote with my heart not just to vote someone out of office. Judith Sears
I’m a staunch capitalist. I don’t begrudge Bernie his million(s), but he doesn’t get to rail about it hypocritically. What is the line between okay millionaires and evil billionaires? There is plenty I don’t like about Biden. Trump trumps all of it. Although he couldn’t get meaningful Wall Street reform, Obama saved the U.S. from an economic meltdown. Passing the ACA cost him dearly politically. Both helped black people. The Dems paid mightily for the impeachment, but it was their Constitutional duty to do it. Clearly Biden needs to sharpen up, but I’ll take his occasional gaffe over Don’s habitual lying any day.
Once again, we are on the same page. While I think this country has to face making health care a right rather than a privilege and we can afford better college access, we won’t get it even if Bernie won and the odds of Bernie beating Trump are minimal. Here’s hoping Berni’s strong showing gives the Dems courage to pursue the vision. The idea that we can’t afford systems that most every Western democracy has is regretable.
Real irony will be if Trump and Pence have to be quarantined because they are exposed to virus at CPAC or big Trump rally held despite warnings and they have to wait indefinitely because there are not enough test kites. One can dream.
Please keep the dream alive. One might think that Trump would want to take better care of the key “70 and over” demographic, at least for another nine months. I share your frustration about inadequate health care and more college access. That’s largely why Jude and I are north of the 49th now. With all its numerous faults, Canada is really making a go of democracy. It’s a much defter system in a much more secular nation.
EVERYBODY BETTER GET ON THE SAME SIDE WITH THIS WU-NAN-FLU. OR ARE YOU GOING TO TELL ME – IT IS JUST A WAY FOR GOVERNMENTS TO GET MY DNA?
SOMEHOW – WE REALLY NEED TO SLOW THIS UPWARD CURVE. ABOVE THE 49 – 300 CASES SO FAR – TEXAS DOUBLED SINCE YESTERDAY – ONLY INCREASE OF 30. I BELIEVE EVERYTHING IS CLOSED BUT MY BOWLING LEAGUE OF FOLKS OVER 60. WOW!
Captain Ahab? Brilliant. Staggering efficiency? Tasty/. Yeah, sorta still buckled up, but suffering short sleep and a bit of whiplash. Carry on, mon frere.
