an abbreviated check-in

May 6, 2014

Spring, after teasing us constantly in the cruelest month of April, arrived with fanfare May 1st.  A glorious tumble of sunshine gave us our first shirt-sleeve warm day of the year.  Suddenly Jude and I remembered that there were crops to plant, blueberry bushes to fertilize and firewood to replenish.  And, to add another level of labour, we decided to enclose the front porch for a mudroom.

The logging is fully apace.  As I type this, trees thud and crash across the creek.  Behind the house, another crew finishes up the road to the last section of the project.  Heavy machinery growls and clunks on a nearby ridge.  Randy the faller told us that he was cutting a tree last week when a rock dislodged from blasting and relodged in the tree fell on him.  Fortunately it just glanced off him, but we were reminded that he has one of the most dangerous jobs on earth.

I had some nifty pics to share with you, but I just broke the gizmo that transfers the images from the photo card to the computer.  Until I can replace it, let me offer you some recent shots I took of Jude as we installed a sign to ward off firewood hunters.

Well, crap.  Those shots are still on the card.  Watch this space.  Go, Giants!

    I know I should know, but what’s a mudroom?

It’s a dry space where folks can take off their boots or shoes just before entering a home. Given the abundance of soil and water here, that is the custom. Ours will have two benches and ample coat hooks. I’ll post some pics soon.
