surviving in a non-apocalyptic world

December 21, 2012

It’s midday here.  Half the solstice gone and still no sign of the apocalypse.  Oh, sure,

there are indications that some of the population is going to disappear.  John Boehner

just suffered his worst defeat as Speaker of the House and simply backed away from the

cliff talks.

The NRA finally responded to the Sandy Hook killings with an outrageous idea — that

armed guards patrol schools.  U.S. Congressman Chris Murphy, a Democrat whose

district includes Newtown, tweeted “Walking out of another funeral and was handed

the NRA transcript.  The most revolting, tone deaf statement I’ve ever seen.”

Louie Gohmert, Republican colleague of Murphy from Texas, was actually more tone

deaf.  He wished Principal Dawn Hochsprung had had an assault rifle to take Adam

Lanza’s head off.  Gohmert, a fount of gibberish who enjoys an “A” rating by the NRA ,

showed no indication that he saw the irony in that.

Small wonder.  Irony in Texas is not only illegal, it’s a felony.

Let me assure you that I believe a multi-party government is vital to democracy.  So it’s

vexing for me to watch the Rabid Right tug the GOP into the sea of oblivion. It has learned

nothing from last month’s election, not even that it lost.  It’s commitment to cluelessness

is truly breathtaking.

As we all still search for answers to this most recent paragraph of violence, a gunman in

central Pennsylvania today killed three others along a rural road before police killed him.

Elsewhere in the state, a Philadelphia teenager was arrested for threatening to shoot up

his school.  Two handguns were taken from his home.

Congressman Gohmert, would you advocate armed guards along all U.S. highways?   If so,

at what point would you remember that you’re a fiscal conservative and opposed to bigger

government?

That was a trick question.  A contradiction like that is too close to irony.

What a terrible tragedy this was and it just seems to go on and on with some of the craziest solutions that I have ever heard. It is of my opinion that the Gov could confiscate every gun in america and still this terrible thing would happen.
Some loose cannon would use knives or get his or her hands on bombs and grenades or just resort to another means of violence. They need to lay off the gun issue and focus on more technology, like school lock downs when class starts, but then again their is the possibility of a disgruntled teacher, princapal or custodian or even a student gone crazy that would find a way to do harm and then what?
I don’t know what the answer is, I suppose that there is not one, but my heart weeps for those killed and the way that it all happend.
Thanks for sharing this Allen, it gave me a chance to speak. Hugs.

Oh I forgot to comment on the lack of the Doomsday chaos. I watched Independence Day last night just in case the world did end today and I wanted to be in the mood for it, lol. Guess I need to find another movie for the day after, lol.

I rarely quote Barry Manilow, but looks like we made it.

I think the NRA stated their position poorly and with no sensitivity at all BUT armed guards do exist already in high crime areas at schools and they have had no shootings. One of them is a town over called Brockton Massachusetts and it is as poverty struck as detroit. It used to be the shoe capital of the nation and know its nothing but drug infested and poor. Their is either an armed officer or hired guard at each school and no shootings at all. As a matter of fact for a short time there were metal detector screenings for kids entering the school too. The idea itself is a good one but I have never heard it presented so stupidly.

There’s a huge and pressing need for a national conversation about this. I hope all voices will be heard and reason will prevail. Guards in schools may have some value, but please remember that Columbine had one.
