big doings up north
Canada has its national election a week from today. Early voting has been robust, suggesting a blockbuster bout between Prime Minister Mark Carney of the Liberals (think U.S. Democrats) and Pierre Poilievre of the Conservatives (Republicans). Carney has a fairly steady lead in the polls but bears the burden of continuing ten years of Liberal rule. Justin Trudeau, who was Prime Minister for that decade, resigned earlier this year because it was becoming obvious that voters want a change.
It was a shrewd move. Carney brings a lot to the table. A world class economist, he was Governour of the Banks of Canada and Britain and a goalie for the Harvard hockey team. He is being touted as a worthy opponent for Trump. Conversely, Poilievre rose to power echoing Agent Orange tactics, including misreporting the attendance of one of his rallies tenfold. He was outpacing Carney, though, until Donny Jay declared tariff war and a desire to annex Canada.
The only way Trump could have offended us Canucks more would have been to try to disband the NHL. Jude and I have lived in B.C. nearly 20 years. It’s difficult to piss off a Canadian, and he did it effortlessly.

DJT just has a lot of natural talent in coaxing others to dislike him bigly–those that do like him may tend to be disgruntled and grumpy folks to begin with…what have they got to lose?

Hey, JB. I agree that he has a preternatural ability to piss people off, but the broadax he’s taken to government is so wide that it has to cut into his base as well. His supporters continue to dwindle, and this before losses from DOGE cutbacks and the tariff wars mount up. Even his most ardent supporters should notice their 401(k) tanking. Semper fi.
