smooth introspective music continues

January 3, 2025

Happy new year, all! I’m taking a break from the 40 or so college football bowls and/or playoff games, so thought I’d check in for the first time in 2025. The title of this post has absolutely nothing to do with the content. I saw it recently as a subtitle during a musical bridge in a You Tube song, and felt it just had to be shared. Enjoy.

I’ve decided to stop obsessing about what Trump will or will not do this year. I have repeatedly under and overestimated him, which often resulted in much gnashing of teeth. There are other ways to save humanity, with brings us to composting toilets.

The one big splurge Jude and I had for Christmas is a Nature’s Head Toilet. Our septic field was maxing out, so we spent $1000 or so for this self-contained system. It installed easily where our old flush toilet sat. We were even able to use some of the old plumbing as part of the venting.

The new system separates urine from feces. The urine goes into an container that can be capped and emptied. We’re putting ours in a large tank where we will dilute it with spring water to use as fertilizer. The feces drops into a compartment with a bedding material which is blended into the poop by a crank that can be turned by hand or foot. We’re using shredded coconut fiber, but other biodegradable bulk like sawdust, peat moss or coffee grounds can be used. After a week of use, we’ve already emptied the urine container once. The feces will take several weeks more, on average, and then go into a compost bin.

The reason I bring this to your attention is that toilet flushing is our most common use of domestic water, even more than showering or bathing. Water is well on its way to becoming our next precious fluid, and Aging Orange has made it clear that his new administration will care Jack Shit about conserving natural resources.

Happy 2025 Marine. Yes, too much football stimulation this time of year-but then again, what better spectator event might we have? DJT will be hard to keep out of our brainwaves-it is sad that he will be our leader for another four years but I am hoping that-just perhaps-there may be some utilitarian wisdom them rest of us might glean from this experience…if not, just hoping we all survive to develop a Plan B. Readying ourselves fro a n arctic vortex headed right smack at us-sleet/snow/ice/single Fahrenheit digits…you recall those bitter winter days in SEK of which there were never that many in a row here… hope the years is productive and I shall now and henceforth visualize you as Cousin Eddie saying “shitter is full…”

Ah, dear Cousin Eddie was indeed a fount of Kansas wisdom, also observing “I don’t know why they call it Hamburger Helper. It does fine on its own.” I hope the worst of the vortex is behind you. I not-so-fondly remember a 17″ snowstorm that swallowed my VW Beetle, a two-week stretch below zero and countless frozen and broken pipes. Up here we’ve had ample rain with highs in the 40’s F. and no snow forecast for two weeks. I’m curious to see what Aging Orange’s fans think of him when the tariffs hit the fan. Semper Fi

I’m not on a news blackout, but am no longer paying attention to it every day. If anything important happens, I’ll hear about it – no doubt about that. It’s not like anything earth-shattering has to be known about TODAY. So I can focus better on things in life that make me content instead of things that make me anxious or angry. It’s a habit of perspective too, isn’t it? I’m strengthening mine in a better direction this year. Wish me luck. And be well, both you and Jude and your new composting toilet. Good purchase.

Yes. perspective rules. I’m realizing that watching the news doesn’t upset me nearly as much as watching the talking heads (not THE Talking Heads, bless their hearts) on CNN and MSNBC parse every nuance of what’s said and implied. I can’t not watch it because all our family and old friends are at Trump’s mercy again come January 20th Best of luck to you.
