let the sunshine (back) in

December 21, 2024

The most scintillating of solstices, everybody! It snuck in early this morning here on the Left Coast, so our island welcomed it last night with a party where we hold our summer market. Jude stopped by on her way home from a hectic day and brought home some outstanding brisket. We Canadians really know how to party, eh?

Here’s hoping the return of the light will include D.C., which Trump and his marauding thugs will reoccupy all too soon. That will be compelling, to say the very least. Trump being Trump, he is already overreaching. He believes he has a “massive” mandate, even though he didn’t quite get half of the popular vote. (All the more reason to dump the electoral college.)

Aging Orange would be wise to note that there’s already grumbling in the ranks. Dozens of GOP Senators and 170 House members just voted to continue funding the government without eliminating the debt ceiling, which Trump coveted. He had threatened those who did with primary challenges. Rick Scott, a key ally of his, lost his bid to replace Mitch McConnell as Senate Majority Leader to a less loyal John Thune.

DonnyJon also wanted Florida Governour Ron DeSantis to appoint Lara Trump, his daughter-in-law, to replace Senator Marco Rubio, whom Trump has nominated for Secretary of State. DeSantis demurred, citing the optics of it all. Lara’s credentials include being co-chair of the Republican National Committee and a cover of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down”.

    However today Congress voted for the first time in many years to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision in Social Security. Trump actually approved this. For all of us public employees who had our SS cut we will now get the amount we were supposed to. They are only going to pay us the missed amount only back to Dec. 2023.. I lost thousands of dollars through this program that was to prevent “double dipping” I was also cut 7% of CalPers pension because I was “eligible for SS” . Many people have died that were caught in this program.

      Thank you for sharing this, Judith. Why do stories this important not get the attention they deserve? Anyone having to work at Dollar Tree should get combat pay.

    Ah yes-the winter solstice is upon us-this is the darkest day of the year other than for November 5… sad to hear that you Canuks are also facing some political upheaval from the ultra conservatives up north…capitalism reigns supreme, even in the once communistic leaning countries, and it just keeps pounding away at our basic democratic freedoms we once thought were so special. All the family is doing well here, considering. Always great to see your writings of the day and hoping both countries-actually all three in North America-can keep what quality of life they had developed and maintained for the respective citizenries…peace always for you and your bride, AP –and forever semper fi, Marine

      Hey, J.B. It doesn’t seem to matter much which political party prevails up here. We have three major ones, so none of them can get too cocky. I think that’s largely because there’s no significant religious fanaticism here. Everyone just seems to want to get along. Our little island is quite progressive, but we have two Bible churches. Semper fi and happy holidays to you and the Colonel.
