Aging Orange is yellow

July 27, 2024

American politics can change at breakneck speed, but I’ve never seen a week like this one. Last Sunday Jude and I were watching a Canadian news station when the crawl at the bottom of the screen simply said “Biden drops out”. We immediately switched to CNN and were nearly moved to tears. The next few days were like the best dessert ever, but I was wary that the main course would be worse than leftovers goulash.

I was delightfully wrong. Each day has brought new endorsements for Kamala Harris. Donations are setting records. And Biden has gracefully transitioned into a vital supporting role.

Best of all, the GOPers don’t know whether to shit or wind their Rolexes. As expected, Trump is spewing toxic waste. He told a group of conservative Christians that they wouldn’t have to ever vote again if they re-elected him. He’s called Harris a “bum” and asserted that she “destroyed” San Francisco, even as my beloved Giants thumped the Colorado Rockies 11-3 there last night.

He’s scared. He’s said he would debate anytime, anywhere; but he’s trying to get out of one on ABC-TV for one on the friendlier confines of Fox “News”. And I believe he’s starting to realize he royally screwed up by picking J.D. Vance for Veep. Vance is still trying to clean up his childless cat-lady faux pas, but the conventional wisdom in politics is that if you’re explaining, you’re losing. I’m hoping that this misadventure will be this election cycle’s equivalent of Katie Couric’s interview of Sarah Palin.
