still finding the cost of freedom

July 1, 2024

Today starts the four day stretch of celebration when the two northernmost nations in North America mark their departures from the British Empire. Like true Canadians, Jude and I will commemorate the event modestly. We’ll do some yardwork, walk the dogs and eat some meat and watermelon.

It will be low-key for personal reasons, as well. I’m grieving the recent death of my long-time friend Wade, a passionate warrior who truly walked the walk. We hadn’t seen each other since 2019, but talked on the phone at least once a month. He was a dedicated father and grandfather. When his daughter hadn’t heard from him for awhile, she drove 300 miles to check on him and found him dead, probably from a heart attack.

Wherever you are, Wade, I’m sure you’re looking for Good Trouble.

On a much wider level, I’m fretting the possible catastrophe unfolding in the U.S. It doesn’t bother me so much that Trump can spew absurd lies in a national debate as it does that the Dems let him get away with it. Biden looked so clueless I thought his handlers might have to lead him offstage. He has to drop out. His unwillingness to accept that is as much a danger to democracy as Aging Orange’s sociopathy.

SCOTUS pretty much fucked us over, unless the general population and a majority in those 5-7 swing states wise up sufficiently to assure DJT never sees office again…there are more colorful and creative solutions I am sure, but they are even bigger fantasies than the hopes I just expressed–got room for a housing development on your land, Marine???

I had once dreamed of building an apartment complex here called Trumpless Towers, but our neighbours and Quadra’s building code and water table would simply not have it. However, we could always find room for you and the Colonel. You do have a tent, eh?

The conservative Dems, Clintons, Obamas et al, Have been keeping the younger more progressive Democrats down going so far as to fund those running against them in their races. Kamala Harris is also a problem. There are younger Dems that should have been encouraged and brought forward. Biden wasn’t in good shape when he got the presidency. Bernie is my man but there are others that Bernie has been actively supporting that are unacceptable to the Conservative Wing of the Democratic Party. They also don’t support Bernie and he tries to help them out but they won’t listen and put him down. Americans love his message.

I do indeed love Bernie and his message, but he’ll always be the outlier in the party because he’s so clear-eyed and uncompromising. And older than Biden.
