enough the snow

The waning days of meteorological winter have chosen to depart up here with a final “Fuck you!” We have 50 mm (2″) of snow which may or may not yield to rain before reverting, re-reverting and re-re-reverting into March. That’s as specific as the weatherfolks would commit to. Small matter, as long as the roads are clear on March 5th, when I head to Victoria for surgery.

The medical powers-that-be want to poke a hole in my chest to see if the hole in my lung that nature poked last summer has indeed healed. I wanted to boast that I feel great, doing everything an old fart can reasonably expect, but between this sentence and the previous one, I had to go clean off our satellite dish. The universe abides, sometimes rudely.

There is plenty to interest me while I await spring’s calming influence. My various sports teams are winning more than losing. Even thought the 49ers lost the Super Bowl, they gave us the best Bowl and the best NFC championship game ever. Our cable package just ended the entire run of Star Trek: Voyager and started it again so we can pick up the episodes we missed. Likewise Northern Exposure. And TNT has re-released a promising sci-fi series The Librarians. I missed it during its 2014-18 run. How bad can it be? It features Bob Newhart, Jane Curtin, Rebecca Romijn and Matt Frewer, who played Max Headroom.

There are also plenty of world events to fret about. The GOP’s obstinacy over Ukraine funding is absolutely heartbreaking in its ethical tonedeafness. The Repubs may have finally gotten over their skis with the Alabama IVF court decision. Israel is redefining genocide.

Hopefully on the bright side, Nikki Haley, although losing to Trump in her home state, got closer than predicted. I think she’ll stay in to be the most viable alternative to Aging Orange should his empire collapse prematurely. And I’m eager to see how Biden responds to the Michigan Dems who voted “uncommitted” in their primary.
